In The Peace and Love of the Most High God, we Present to Your Excellences, Honorable World Leaders, Officers, Offices and International Agencies:

PROPOSAL TO DECLARE THE CORONATION DAY, NOVEMBER 2, 1930,
OF HIS IMPERIAL MAJESTY, EMPEROR HAILE SELASSIE I
AND HER IMPERIAL MAJESTY, EMPRESS WOIZERO MENEN ASFAW
OF ETHIOPIA –  A UNITED NATIONS INTERNATIONAL DAY
 named:

“HIS IMPERIAL MAJESTY EMPEROR HAILE SELASSIE I
 INTERNATIONAL DAY”

We join all the peoples of world in welcoming and observing The United Nations-declared International Decade for People of African Descent – 2015-2024.

Also, under a House Bill signed into law by the President of the United States of America in 2018, the year 2019 to August 2020 is being commemorated as the400th Anniversary of the Enslavement of the first Africans who landed in America as slaves.  The Bill also officially authorized the launch of a Commission to direct the activities outlined in the Bill.

We honor the United Nations and the United States of America for the historic recognition of the Black peoples of the World and congratulate our brothers & sisters, our Black Family on this auspicious season of our lifetime.

Unfortunately, many facts related to the History of Africa and Africans have been lost or distorted, thus depriving the Black family of due acknowledgement of their true worth as a people and of Africa’s outstanding contribution to the growth of civilization.

The global significance of the political, social, economic and religious sovereignty of Ethiopia with its biblical heritage linked to the Solomonic Dynasty speaks to an important and historically unique identity of which Ethiopia and Ethiopians/Africans can be proud.

The intent of this Declaration is to provide a pathway leading to improved Race Relations across the globe under the auspices of the eminent world bodies engaged in this proclamation by engendering respect between nations and between individuals through knowledge of World History based on the life and times of His Imperial Majesty, Emperor Haile Selassie the First and Her Imperial Majesty, Empress Woizero Menen Asfaw; while raising the level of appreciation of the Spiritual value and uniting force of God’s Word and the Church across all religions that fall under the Abrahamic covenant – as the Father of many Nations.

His Imperial Majesty addressed the importance of Race Relations, Equality and Human Rights when he addressed the United Nations in 1963.  Some of the Emperor’s words in that speech where he recalled his presentation before the League of Nations in 1936 were immortalized in a song entitled “War” by the world’s most renown and influential Reggae music artiste, the Honorable Robert Nesta Marley (Bob Marley):

that until the philosophy which holds one race superior
and another inferior
is finally and permanently discredited and abandoned;

that until there are no longer first class and second class citizens of any nation;

that until the color of a man’s skin is of no more significance than the color of his eyes;

that until the basic human rights are equally guaranteed to all without regard to race;

that until that day, the dream of lasting peace and world citizenship and the rule of international morality will remain but a fleeting illusion, to be pursued but never attained.

And until the ignoble and unhappy regimes that hold our brothers in Angola, in Mozambique and in South Africa in subhuman bondage have been toppled and destroyed;

until bigotry and prejudice and malicious and inhuman self-interest have been replaced by understanding and tolerance and good-will;

until all Africans stand and speak as free beings, equal in the eyes of all men, as they are in the eyes of Heaven;

until that day, the African continent will not know peace. We Africans will fight, if necessary, and we know that we shall win, as we are confident in the victory of good over evil.

The designation by the United Nations and endorsement by the African Union, World governments and international agencies of a day in the year to honor His and Her Imperial Majesties, Emperor Haile Selassie the First and Empress Woizero Menen Asfaw, will ensure Ethiopia’s role in history is exposed to all future generations and will help to create a conduit for improved Race Relations across the globe.

Recognizing the importance of knowing one’s history, His Imperial Majesty himself made this statement:

An awareness of our past is essential to the establishment of our personality and our identity as Africans.”

By honoring His and Her Imperial Majesties, these auspicious bodies also honor Ethiopia and the rest of Africa and their place in world history.

Following are seven (7) facts about Ethiopia that the worldwide family can celebrate:

  1. Ethiopia is mentioned in the Holy Bible thirty-four (34) times beginning in the second chapter of the Book of Genesis describing the location of the Garden of Eden.
  2. History logs The Ethiopian Orthodox Church as being the first Christian church in the world based on the Apostle Phillip’s baptism of the Ethiopian Eunuch on his way home to Ethiopia after worshipping in Jerusalem.  When he brought the Gospel of Christ back to his country it was accepted by Queen Candace and the rest of the country.
  3. The oldest Christian Bible that has been found (dating back to the 6th Century) was an illustrated and bound volume found in a Monastery in Ethiopia. It is written in the ancient language used in the Liturgy of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church – Geez.
  4. Despite many stories of it being in different locations across the globe, the Ethiopian Orthodox Church has quietly and consistently maintained that the original Ark of the Covenant resides in Ethiopia, presently in the city of Axum.
  5. The ruins of the palace of the Queen of Sheba continues to be a tourist attraction in the same city of Axum, Ethiopia.
  6. The oldest known community of Jews – known as beta Israel – was found in Ethiopia.
  7. Ethiopia is acknowledged as the only country in the world that has never been colonized by a foreign power.

His Imperial Majesty hosted the Venerable Heads of the Oriental Orthodox Churches in Addis Ababa 1965.  On January 15, 1965 at that historic gathering, the title of “Defender of the Faith” was officially bestowed upon him by the Conference. The Oriental Orthodox Conference family is comprised of the Ethiopian, Coptic, Armenian, Syrian, Indian and Eritrean Churches.

His Imperial Majesty was the main speaker at The Central Committee of the World Council of Churches meeting in Addis Ababa on January 10th 1971.  The Central Committee is the principal policy‐making body for the Council, whose 235 members (at the time) included most major Protestant and Orthodox denominations throughout the world.  Introduced by Billy Graham, the most renown Evangelist of the era, the Conference also honored His Imperial Majesty as a guest speaker.

This excerpt [translated] from His Imperial Majesty’s inspirational speech to the Conference reflects his personal commitment to World Peace and his Christian conviction of service to Humanity without favor based on class, color or wealth.  His words here stand the test of time:

“We Christians living by the faith of Christ, the Head and Pillar on whom the Church is founded, cannot escape the responsibility to work for the peace of the world, and to ensure equality for all human beings created by God, lest we fail in our duty by being mere passive witnesses to the gruesome spectacle of human beings, created in the image of God, being deprived by virtue of their color or their poverty, of the benefits and blessings that are the birthright of every man and woman.”

For the above and many other reasons, it is important that Ethiopia’s role in History be given the place it deserves in world consciousness and that future generations of all nations and races have the opportunity to learn about her story.

The lives of His Imperial Majesty, Emperor Haile Selassie the First and Her Imperial Majesty, Empress Woizero Menen Asfaw have stood out to the world as a Holy union of two devout Christians who lived an exemplary life of caring for their family, their country and the Church in the face of harrowing challenges, including domestic challenges and the Italian invasion of 1935.

His Imperial Majesty was credited with restoring the autonomy (or Autocephaly) of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church to Ethiopia from the administration of the Egyptian Orthodox Coptic Church.

His Imperial Majesty was also an international peace-maker and world diplomat, not only concerned about his own country and people, but about the entire African continent and the rest of the world – humanity in general.  He will be remembered throughout history as one of the most consistent voices for human rights and justice for all, speaking out against the evils of the Apartheid system in South Africa and other human rights atrocities throughout the Africa and the world.  A true world leader, he traveled to numerous countries across the globe and was met with tumultuous welcome everywhere he went.

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED that:

Whereas, His Imperial Majesty, Emperor Haile Selassie I was born on July 23, 1892 in Harar, Ethiopia; was a member and the 225th King of the Solomonic Dynasty – his lineage tracing back to King Menelik I, the son of King Solomon of Jerusalem and the Queen of Sheba of Ethiopia; and who has been acknowledged throughout his lifetime as a Christian King.

Whereas, His Imperial Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie the First, along with Her Imperial Majesty Empress Woizero Menen Asfaw were crowned Emperor and Empress on November 2, 1930 when His Imperial Majesty received the full traditional titles “King of Kings, Lord of Lords of Ethiopia, Conquering Lion of the Tribe of Judah and Elect of God”.

Whereas, Her Imperial Majesty Empress Menen Asfaw (Baptismal name Walatta Giyorgis) the wife of Emperor Haile Selassie was born on April 3, 1891.When Haile Selassie was crowned Emperor of Ethiopia, at his request his wife was crowned Empress immediately after him, contrary to tradition whereas she would have been crowned three (3) days after the Emperor.

Whereas, from 1930 to 1974 His Imperial Majesty sought to modernize his country and steered Ethiopia into the mainstream of post-World War II African politics. He implemented social, economic and educational reforms in his commitment to modernize Ethiopian government and society. This exemplary vision by an African leader for an African nation at the time lives on long after his lifetime and continues to benefit many to this day.

Whereas, His Imperial Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie the First was recognized with respect to his Contribution in 1935, when he led the resistance as Italy invaded Ethiopia.  He brought Ethiopia into the League of Nations and later The United Nations.  He also made Addis Ababa the center for the Organization of African Unity (today’s African Union). He helped write the Charter of the League of Nations which later formed the basis of the Charter of the United Nations.

Whereas, His Imperial Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie the First, was a man of great faith who loved community as he claimed justice due to Ethiopia.  He stated,

We must become bigger than we have been: more courageous, greater in spirit, larger in outlook. We must become members of a new race, overcoming petty prejudice, owing our ultimate allegiance not to nations but to our fellow men within the human community.

Whereas, His Imperial Majesty, Emperor Haile Selassie the First was the recipient of numerous Honors, Titles and Honorary degrees from Educational Institutions across the globe; he was The New York Times Man of the Year in 1936; he was a diplomat of the highest order and acclaim; he was favorably received by Kings and Queens, Heads of Governments and lay citizens in numerous countries from Africa and Europe to the Caribbean and America; he was the only Head of State to receive two ticker tape parades down New York City’s Canyon of Heroes; he was a most devout and exemplary Christian who sent the Ethiopian Orthodox Church to the United States and the Caribbean; there are many individuals who attest to miracles ascribed to him; and he is revered by a growing number of followers of the Rastafarian faith.

Whereas, Their Imperial Majesties, Emperor Haile Selassie the First and Empress Woizero Menen Asfaw, in seeking to ensure Justice and to protect beleaguered Ethiopians/Africans at home and abroad from abuse and annihilation; and in seeking to effect happiness and aspirations for Unity, Solidarity, Liberty, Freedom and Self-determination to be attained by the Ethiopian/African family; ecclesiastically ordained and constitutionally empowered The Ethiopian World Federation, Incorporated in 1937 as a membership organization and Protectorate of the Sovereignty of the African family worldwide.  The below Preamble and Aims and Objects extracted from the Constitution & ByLaws provide further documentation of Their Imperial Majesties’ core values, their high ideals, hopes and expectations for the Ethiopian/African Family grounded on their faith in God and God’s purpose for humanity:

Extract from The Ethiopian World Federation, Incorporated Constitution & By-Laws

(h)  To encourage its members to develop interest and pride in Democratic institutions and to promote Democratic principles and ideals.

May God help us to accomplish these aims and ideals.

And,

Whereas, Their Imperial Majesties, Emperor Haile Selassie the First and Empress Woizero Menen Asfaw, further affirming their commitment to provide a safe haven for Africa’s kidnapped and enslaved children, along with the government of Ethiopia deeded the Shashemane Land Grant in Ethiopia in the name and under the administration of The Ethiopian World Federation, Incorporated to provide a home for the Repatriation/Return of the children of Ethiopia’s/Africa’s stolen and enslaved sons and daughters from the Diaspora. (Note that 4 other African Governments also did.)

Whereas, Their Imperial Majesties, Emperor Haile Selassie the First and Empress Woizero Menen Asfaw, further affirming their commitment to provide a safe haven for Africa’s kidnapped children, along with the government of Ethiopia deeded the Shashemane Land Grant in Ethiopia in the name and under the administration of The Ethiopian World Federation, Incorporated to provide a home for the Repatriation/Return of the children of Ethiopia’s/Africa’s stolen and enslaved sons and daughters from the Diaspora.

Whereas, Her Imperial Majesty, Empress Woizero Menen Asfaw was active in promoting women’s issues in Ethiopia. She was Patroness of the Ethiopian Red Cross and the Ethiopian Women’s Charitable Organization. She was also a patroness of the Jerusalem Society that arranged for pilgrimages to the Holy Land. She founded the Empress Menen School for Girls in Addis Ababa where girls from all over the Empire received a modern education at a time when educating women was not the norm. The Empress gave generously to charitable causes and sponsored programs for the poor, the sick and handicapped.

Whereas, Her Imperial Majesty, Empress Woizero Menen Asfaw’s life was a shining light for the Abyssinian people especially during their darkest hour – the Italian invasion under Mussolini. She was actively engaged in supporting the Emperor while he was on the battle field providing logistics and administrative support.  She moved about the city encouraging and building up morale among the people, rallying the women, especially, to support and provide care and material needs for the fighting men as she also prayed unceasingly for Ethiopia’s victory against the invaders.

Whereas, Her Imperial Majesty Empress Woizero Menen Asfaw was devoutly religious. She attended church regularly and supported the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church financially and spiritually.  She built, renovated and endowed numerous churches in Ethiopia, as well as the Holy Trinity Monastery in Jerusalem. She gave generously towards the building of the new Cathedral of St. Mary of Zion at Axum, and built the Temple to house the Ark of the Covenant on that same site.

Whereas, there are many special days observed all over the world that represent diverse nations, cultures and religions, The Coronation Day of His Imperial Majesty, Emperor Haile Selassie the First and Her Imperial Majesty, Empress Woizero Menen Asfaw are befitting to be honored  as one of The United Nations’ International Days based on their contribution to the Church; particularly to the Abrahamic Faiths, their contribution to Ethiopia/Africa, Ethiopians/Africans at home and abroad, to the worldwide family; for their contribution to Humanity, to International Relations, Democratic Institutions and to World Peace.

We Honor His Imperial Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie the First for His Life as the Restoring King of the Davidic Covenant by the way of the Solomonic Dynasty, in fulfillment of prophecy based on the promise God made to David in 2 Samuel 7:12-16:

 “When your days are over and you rest with your ancestors, I will raise up your offspring to succeed you, your own flesh and blood, and I will establish his kingdom. He is the one who will build a house for my Name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. I will be his father, and he will be my son. When he does wrong, I will punish him with a rod wielded by men, with floggings inflicted by human hands.But my love will never be taken away from him, as I took it away from Saul, whom I removed from before you. Your house and your kingdom will endure forever before me; your throne will be established forever.”

We Honor Her Imperial Majesty, Empress Woizero Menen Asfaw for her life as a devoted wife and mother to her family, mother to the people of Abyssinia, especially those in need, and patron of the Church.  Today’s women are still inspired by the speeches she gave calling on all the world’s women at the time Ethiopia came under attack to stand up and be counted as being opposed to war, and to come to the aid of each other regardless of distance, race or religion.  She was strong in her conviction that all women should be opposed to war because of the destruction on the land and the destruction of families.

At the beginning of the impending crisis of the Italian invasion in 1935, this is an important and passionate speech given by the Empress:

“We are indeed glad for this evening which has caused our voice to be heard by all women throughout the world. Regardless of the different climate they live in, women in this world are connected and have the same desire in maintaining world peace and love.

Obviously, war is one of the major problems which bring disaster in the life of mankind. In spite of the difference of colour, race, creed and religion between women in this world, they all hate war because the fruit of war is nothing but disaster.

War exterminates their beloved husbands, their brothers and their children. It destroys and eliminates their families. At this hour, and such a tragic and sad period where aggressors have planned a very heavy war upon our lives, we would like to bring this to the attention of all women throughout the world, that it is their duty to voice and express solidarity against such acts.”

THEREFORE, BE IT DECLARED THAT:

THE CORONATION DAY, NOVEMBER 2, 1930,
OF HIS IMPERIAL MAJESTY,
EMPEROR HAILE SELASSIE THE FIRST
AND HER IMPERIAL MAJESTY,
EMPRESS WOIZERO MENEN ASFAW OF ETHIOPIA
